Home in Harrietfield

As I sit in Harrietfield surrounded by snow and minus something-or-rather temperatures I cannot help but wonder what 8 months in Malawi will hold. My plan is to leave the UK on the 13th or 14th of January and fly to Lilongwe with the other girls who are also travelling to Malawi. This project has been a long time coming-I originally signed up for my Project Trust selection course in July 2009 and here I am, 17 months later, counting down the days until I leave!

I am really glad to say that I managed to exceed my fundraising target of £4250 in March 2010 and so I have been able to save up for equipment and injections, as well as provide Project Trust with extra funds. Spending a few days in a book in the library hunting out charitable trusts and organising various bake sales, coffee mornings and ceilidhs brought the money trickling in. People's generosity really did amaze me and I am so grateful for everyone who helped me get to this point-so thank you!

I thought that some brief project details wouldn't go amiss on this blog, so here goes: I will be living in Nchalo in a small newly built house with Sophie- my Project Trust partner. Nchalo is a village about 2 hours south of Blantyre (Malawi's biggest city). Here we will be involved in a wide range of activities, from feeding centres and health clinics, to the local youth group and the drumming group. I have to say, I haven't much experience in drumming, but I hope that in 8 months time I will have mastered some African drumming skills!
Above is the house that we will be living in, though we have been assured that by the time we move in there will be glass in the windows to protect us from the mosquitoes! I have had all my injections and am sorted with anti-malarials. All that is left to do is gather together the last few bits and bobs, pack, and then catch that plane. Providing the snow stays off, this may all go to plan!

I will try to keep this blog updated with news and final preparations, but this post was really a trial run so that I know how to blog from an internet cafe in Nchalo! Have a very Merry Chrtistmas and a Happy New Year. I hope to see as many people as I can before I leave, but if I can't, then than you for your support and I will see you in 8 months!
